In response to the Dutch trend of ‚Gray Gardens‘ characterised by paved areas and cultivated lawns – this project proposes a transformative method to reintegrate a diverse spectrum of plants into such environments, enhancing local biodiversity. Under the motto ‚We need to accept the weeds‘ it introduces innovative shapes made from soil, clay, and native wildflower seeds designed to mimic paving stones for paved areas (1) and sculptures for lawns (2), reducing the need for maintenance. These shapes gradually dissolve under natural conditions, sprouting into lush wildflower beds that attract various pollinators and enrich the ecosystem.
(1) Seed Pavers
Uniquely shaped like paver stones to seamlessly integrate into typical Dutch garden aesthetics. The dual-purpose design serves as both a symbolic and functional critique of current garden practices, advocating for a greener, more vibrant garden space.(2) Growing Figures
The symmetrical designs of the figure is a criticism of human attempts to impose order and control on nature. They are a reminder of historical ornamental styles, which often attempted to domesticate natural forms for aesthetic purposes.
As this figure dissolve and wildflowers grow, they visually demonstrate nature‘s reclaiming of structured spaces and illustrate the beautiful and inevitable triumph of natural processes over human designs.
